About Us
History
Long before the South Georgia Homeschool Association (SGHA) began acquiring membership, it was born as an ideal in the heart of its founder. Dana Armstrong, a veteran homeschool mother of five, was inspired by the passionate belief that every child deserves an excellent education. Recognizing the need for this philosophy to be nurtured as a standard, Dana began to unite her love for children and education with her efforts to build a strong support system for homeschoolers in south Georgia. Finally, in the spring of 2007, SGHA began to grow as dedicated families came together in support of our children. To read more about Dana Armstrong, check out her biography on the Mentors page.
Membership
Since its establishment, SGHA has continued to flourish as more and more families recognize the benefits of a shared vision. The current SGHA membership includes a diversity of homeschool philosophies, from unschooling to the classical approach, and all variations in-between. It is a dedication to homeschooling as a means of excellence in our children’s education that serves to unite the SGHA members into one remarkable family. True to its commitment to quality education for all children, membership with SGHA is free and open to all homeschoolers and to those interested in homeschooling. For information on how to become an SGHA member, or if you have additional questions, view the Membership page.
Politics
SGHA is run by a Board of Directors that strives to maintain the purpose of SGHA: to serve, educate, socialize, inform, and inspire the homeschooling community. A position on the Board of Directors is open to all homeschooling SGHA Members. Communication between the Board and its Members is kept open through utilization of the SGHA Yahoo!Group email loop, meetings that welcome Member participation, and invitation to an extensive calendar of fun and educational events. A list of current Directors is available at the bottom of this page. Please feel free to contact any of the Directors with further questions or comments. Both Members and non-Members can join the SGHA Yahoo!Group.
Participation
Participation in events sponsored by SGHA is open to both Members and non-Members. If you are considering joining SGHA but would like to get to know the group better first, the SGHA calendar provides many excellent ways for you and your child(ren) to mingle. Apart from the Yahoo!Group email loop, business is conducted informally during monthly moms’ socials. Because business is managed separately, SGHA is able to offer monthly meetings just for the kids. The kids’ meetings are organized around a central theme, and are designed to be both fun and educational. Monthly field trips are organized to coordinate with the monthly kids’ themes, and additional field trips provide enrichment in other areas. Other activities include special events (such as the annual Back-to-School Kick-Off), park days, a variety of clubs, and a one-of-a-kind Mentorship program for new homeschool families. See what we have going on by clicking on the Calendar page and Clubs page. View the Mentor page for more information on this wonderful program, including short introductions to each of SGHA’s current Mentors.
